Isfahan was known for its beautiful architecture, including its mosques, palaces, and bridges, and was a center of trade, culture, and learning in the Safavid period. The engraving by van der Aa depicts the city's central square, known as the Naqsh-e Jahan Square, which is surrounded by important buildings and landmarks such as the Ali Qapu Palace and the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque.
