Ferdinand Schmutzer
[Austrian, 1870-1928]
Ferdinand Schmutzer studied art in Vienna, under Kuhne and William Unger, and finished his education in Paris and in Holland. Around the turn of the century Ferdinand Schmutzer gained a strong reputation throughout Europe for his delicate and perceptive studies of rural life. Today the etchings of Ferdinand Schmutzer are housed in the permanent collections of major public museums in Dusseldorf, Berlin and Vienna. His etched art gained for him Gold Medals at both the Dresden and Vienna Expositions
The Hay Stack was commissioned by the Vienna publisher, Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in 1906. During the early twentieth century Ferdinand Schmutzer created at least three original etchings for this publisher
