Cap Corse Castle Ghana Fort Anglois Old map Bellin 1750

Titled: Plan Du Fort Anglois Et De La Ville Du Cape De Corse.
Description: Fine antique map of Castle Cape Corse in Ghana. The map is copperplate engraved with hand coloring, a great item of the Africa slave history.

Cape Coast Castle is one of a number of "slave castles", fortifications in Ghana built by Swedish traders, originally for trade in timber and gold, later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Other Ghanaian slave castles include the Portuguese foundation of Elmina Castle (later Dutch) and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and traded in the Americas and the Caribbean.
This “gate of no return” was the last stop before crossing the great Atlantic Ocean.

Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772)
Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine.
