Description: This antique map of the Gold Coast in Africa depicts the Dutch, English, French, and Portuguese camps during the 18th century. It provides a detailed view of European trading posts along the coast. The map is a work of Jacques Nicolas Bellin, a prominent French cartographer of the period.
Cartographer/Mapmaker: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772), born in Paris, was the hydrographer to France’s hydrographic office. He was a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London. This map was engraved by Jakob van der Schley, a Dutch engraver who studied under Bernard Picart. Many of the plates in the Dutch edition of Prévost’s Histoire générale des voyages are signed by van der Schley.
Origin: Published in Histoire générale des voyages by Abbé Prévost d'Exiles, printed between 1747 and 1780 by Pierre de Hondt in The Hague.
