Description:
This antique map depicts Fort St. Anthony (Santo Antonio) at Axim, Ghana, on the Gold Coast. It is a historical copperplate engraving by the renowned French mapmaker Jacques Nicolas Bellin, showcasing Africa’s coastal defenses during the 18th century.

Cartographer/Mapmaker:
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772), born in Paris, served as the hydrographer of France's hydrographic office and was a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London. Over his 50-year career, he produced numerous maps, especially for the French Navy.

Engraver:
Jakob van der Schley (1715 – 1779), a Dutch engraver, trained under Bernard Picart. Many plates in the Dutch edition of Prévost's Histoire générale des voyages were signed by van der Schley.

Publishers:
Prévost, Abbé (1697–1763), Meusnier de Querlon (1702–1780), and Pierre de Hondt in The Hague (active between 1747–1780).
