This old copperplate engraving titled Vue de Cananor depicts the walled city of Kannur, formerly known as Cannanore, with trading ships in the foreground. Created by the renowned French cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin in 1754, this antique print offers a historical view of the important trading hub along the Malabar Coast.
Cartographer/Mapmaker:
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772) was a distinguished hydrographer of France's Hydrographic Office and a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London. He spent over 50 years creating maps of vital importance to the French Navy and the Ministère de la Marine.
This engraving was published in Antonine de Prévost's Histoire générale des voyages and engraved by Jakob van der Schley (1715 – 1779), a Dutch engraver trained by Bernard Picart.
