Original print of Surat previously known as Suryapur, Surat Gujarati India on the bank of river Tapi with sailing ships in the foreground.
The Morish Castle, Fort in Surat had been built by Muhammed Tughlak as a fortification against the attack of Bhils.
In 1373 A.D., emperor Firoz Tughlak(1351 to 1388) is said to have built a fort at Surat to protect the town against Bhils who were local tribal people of this region.
In 1608, ships from the English East India Company started docking in Surat, using it as a trade and transit point.

Mapmaker Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772)
Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London.
Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine.

Engraver: Jakob van der Schley aka Jakob van Schley (26 July 1715 Amsterdam - 12 February 1779 Amsterdam) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver.
He studied under Bernard Picart (1673-1733)
