After 1492, in the years after the great voyage of Christopher Columbus, brought the Spanish conquerors, priests and settlers, the Spanish culture in an area that stretches from south of the United States today to the southern tip of South America. Spain sold Florida in 1821 and after the lost war against the United States (1846-1848) had Mexico to cede a territory comprising the present states of California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. The Mexicans in the annexed territories were to Hispanic-Americans, in short Hispanics.
