The Spanish conqueror Fernando (or Hernando) Cortez was born in 1485 in Medellin. Fernando Cortez took part in the conquest of Cuba in 1511 under the leadership of Diego de Velazquez. From Cuba he went to battle against the Aztecs in Mexico.
