Antique bird eye view of Geldern (Gelria) Germany, Copperplate engraved with hand coloring.
Georg Braun ( Cologne, 1541 - Cologne, 1622 ) was a German cartographer. Braun is particularly known for the publication of the Civitates orbis terrarum, a publication he started with Frans Hogenberg in 1572.
Often in its history, Geldern lay in the battlefield of territorial disputes. It was subordinate to Spanish rule from 1543 until 1578, when it was occupied by the Dutch. By treason Geldern returned to Spanish control in 1587.
