The engraving shows the old and new city in bird's eye view with churches, castles and fortifications. The coat of arms of the city with key and eagle, a description of the city at the front and back of the page. A nice example.
Mapmaker / Cartographer: Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) Sebastian worked as a lecturer at the University of the Franciscan Order in Tübingen, where he studied astrology to the famous astronomer Johannes Stöffler. in addition to his main work, the Cosmographia, Sebastian Munster wrote some very extensive work in the field of Hebrew studies, natural science, geography, and theology. The map is an antique woodblock German edition print from Sebastian Munsters Cosmographia, published by Heinrich Petri in Basel.
Henricus Petrus (1508–1579) and his son Sebastian Henric Petri (1546, Basel – 1627, Basel) headed the printer shop of Basel (Basilea in Latin), called Officina Henricpetrina.
