Old 1612 original copper engraved print of Leeuwarden Friesland, showing the Catholics who left the town during the Dutch Spanish war.

The map was originally published in the 1581 (Italian) and 1582 (French) editions of the 'Discrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi' by L. Guicciardini, published by J. Janssonius.
The Eighty Years' War, or Dutch War of Independence, (1568–1648) began as a revolt of the Seventeen Provinces against Philip II of Spain, the sovereign of the Habsburg Netherlands.
