Title: Débarquement à Middelburgh, L’Une des Isles Frienddly, (Des Amis)
Landing at Middelburgh, One of the Friendly Isles

Captain Cook's landing at Middelburgh, one of the Friendly Isles, is captured in this beautifully hand-colored, antique engraved print.
This original copper engraving from Captain Cook's second voyage is an authentic piece from the era, not a later 1800 edition.

Description:
On his return voyage to New Zealand in 1774, Captain Cook landed at several islands including the Friendly Islands, Easter Island, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu. This print, Plate 34 from Atlas Cook, vividly depicts his landing at Middelburgh, one of the Friendly Isles.
Tonga earned the name "Friendly Islands" due to the warm reception Cook received on his first visit in 1773.

This original engraving, created during Cook's time, comes from one of the first editions of "Voyage dans L’Hemisphere Austral et autour du Monde," which chronicles Cook's extensive voyages. Engraved by the esteemed Robert Bernard, this piece is a testament to the exceptional seamanship, surveying, and cartographic skills of Captain Cook. His voyages mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii with unprecedented detail, influencing exploration and cartography well into the 20th century. Cook's legacy of scientific and geographical knowledge remains influential, and numerous memorials worldwide honor his contributions.

Origin:
One of the first editions of "Voyage dans L’Hemisphere Austral et autour du Monde," réalisé sur les Vaisseaux de Roi, L'Aventure & la Resolution… Écrit par Jacques Cook, Commandant de la Resolution… (engraved plates and maps, many of which are double-page or folding). Engraved by Robert Bernard, First Engraver.
