Description: Old antique map of Nanjing in the Province Jiangsu and Su Chew Fu in China by the cartographer Nicolas Bellin 1756. The plans showing the walled fortress of Nanking left and Su-Tcheou-Fou or Su-Chew-Fu surrounded with rivers right. The map is copperplate engraved with hand coloring and is derived from Antonine de Prevost d' Exile's Histoire generale des voyages.
Mapmaker: Nicolas Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine.
