Fortress of Charlemont, France by Jacob van Deventer, 1688
Title: Charle Mont

This antique bird's-eye view showcases the impressive fortifications of Charlemont, a historic French stronghold located near the Belgian border along the Meuse River. The map is a copperplate engraving enhanced with hand coloring, highlighting the architectural and defensive details of this significant site.

The cartographer, Jacob Roelofs van Deventer, was a renowned Dutch geographer of the 16th century, famous for producing the earliest comprehensive series of maps of Dutch cities. Appointed as Royal Geographer in 1543, his groundbreaking work inspired later cartographers such as Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, who adapted van Deventer's maps into their city atlases over a decade later.
