Copperplate engraved map during the Eighty Years' War, Dunkirk was briefly in the hands of the Dutch rebels, from 1577.
Spanish forces under the Duke of Parma re-established Spanish rule in 1583 and it became a base for the notorious Dunkirkers.
The Dunkirkers briefly lost their home port when the city was conquered by the French in 1646 but Spanish forces recaptured the city in 1652.

Louis II de Bourbon, 4e prince de Condé, byname the Great Condé, French le Grand Condé, also called duc d’Enghien leader of the last of the series of aristocratic uprisings in France known as the Fronde
He later became one of King Louis XIV’s greatest generals.
