Antique small map of the Siege of Metz from 19 August - 27 October 1870 .
The siege was fought during the Franco-Prussian War and ended in a decisive Allied German victory.
The French Army of the Rhine under François Bazaine retreated into the Metz fortress after its defeat by the Germans at the Battle of Gravelotte on 18 August 1870.

Origin: The 6th edition, entitled Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon, was published 1905 in Leipzig and Wien by Joseph Meyers Bibliographic Institute Leipzig und Wien.

Late 19th- and Early 20th-Century European City-Plan, published 1905 by: Bibliographisches Institut was founded 1826 in Gotha by Joseph Meyer, moved 1828 to Hildburghausen and 1874 to Leipzig.
