Title: La Rochelle.
Description: Birdseye view of La Rochelle with seaport, an fortress city with walls and the Tower de la Chaîne, so called because a large chain was stretched at night between the tower and the Saint-Nicolas tower to close the port. In the 15th century a third tower was built, the Tower de la Lanterne, a round base sur-mounted by an octagonal spire, as a lighthouse. Original 1638 copperplate engraving in hand coloring with title notes.

Mapmaker: Matthäus Merian. (Basel, 22 September 1593 - Bad Schwalbach, 19 June 1650) In 1623 Merian took over the publishing house of his father-in-law after de Bry's death. In 1626 he became a citizen of Frankfurt and could henceforth work as an independ-ent publisher.
