Artist Cartographer: Matthäus Merian der Ältere was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt Germany as geographer, and later (circa 1640) with his own son, Caspar Merian (1627 - 1686) was one of the most important topographic engraver and publisher of the Baroque.
Origin: The Topographia Sueviae is one of the 16 volumes of the Topographia Germaniae by Matthäus Merian (engravings) and Martin Zeiller (texts). It was created in 1643 and was published in 1655 by Matthaeus Merian's heirs.
