Ceylon olim Taprobana incolis Tenarisin - Lotter map 1740

Title: Ceylon olim Taprobana incolis Tenarisin et Lekawn dicta maxima et simul dictissima Maris Indici Insula accuratissime aeri incisa et excusa cura et sumtibus Tobiae Conradi Lotteri, Chalc. Et Geographi Augustano.

Description: Old antique highly detailed engraved map of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) colored by provinces, showing many places, forts and forest.
The map shows an architectural baroque cartouche representing European trade with Ceylon, Scales at lower left with German description.
Original 18th century map in full hand coloring.

Mapmaker: Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777)
Lotter marriage with the eldest daughter of Matthew Seutter. Lotter created the 'Atlas Minor'.
After the death of Seutter (1757), his son Karl Albrecht led (1722-1762) and his son Johann Michael Probst and Lotter Elder (Father of J. G. Probst) the company further.
Lotter in 1757/58 was the sole owner. He removed the names of all Seutter original plates and replaced it with his own. Tobias Conrad Lotter's son Matthew Albrecht Lotter (1741-1810) led the publisher - also a Globe production - continues. The Lotter Verlag in Augsburg existed from 1758 to 1810.

Origin: Atlas minor Praecipua orbis terrarum imperia, regna et provincias, Germania Potissimum tabelli 80 exactae delineatis sistens usui militiae ducum ac peregrinantium maxime accommodatus opera) whose emergence coincided with the years 1740-1744.
Lotter Atlas consists of the 63 - mostly engraved by him - cards from Seutter Atlas Minor, where he had inserted his name in the bottom as a publisher address, and 16 newly created maps of Lotter.
