He was studiet as a lithographer in his early years by Joseph Guichard. He was connected by a close friendship with Édouard Manet, James McNeill Whistler and many other fighters for the Impressionist cause. in 1889 he was awarded by the French government with the appointment as Officer in the Legion of Honor.
