Tartares de Kalmuks

Description:
This 1750 antique print features Central Asian Tartar women, specifically depicting the Kalmyk people in their traditional attire. The figures in the print are labeled as Dame Tartare, Bonzesse, Paisan, and Servante, showcasing a variety of roles within the community. The print is a copperplate engraving with hand coloring, created from drawings made during explorations of the Russia region in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Cartographer/Mapmaker:
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was a renowned French cartographer and hydrographer who served as the official geographer of the French Navy. He was a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London, known for his detailed and accurate maps and prints.
