Description: Carte Du Detroit de Waeigats old antique map of Nova Zembla, Russia, by N. Bellin published in L'Histoire Generale des Voyages. The map show the Dutch voyage of 1594 by William Barentsz. Barentsz left the island of Texel with a group of three ships to try finding the Northeast passage above Siberia. Between 23 and 29 June, Barentsz stayed at Kildin Island.
Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772) Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine.
