Tartaria Asistic Sarmatia Cosmographia Sebastian Münster 1578

Description: Historic map of the flu of the Volga River from Moscow Russia (Europe Sarmatica) to the Caspian and Black Sea with Crimean Peninsula and Armenia down the seas.(Asia Sarmatica).
Sarmatia was the name used in Ptolemy's Geography and after used by Sabastian Munster in his Cosmographia from 1544 the earliest German-language description of the world.

Cartographer: Sebastian Munster (1488-1552)
Sebastian worked as a lecturer at the University of the Franciscan Order in Tübingen, where he studied astrology to the famous astronomer Johannes Stöffler, in addition to his main work, the Cosmographia.
From 1524 to 1527, he was a professor in Heidelberg and in 1528 in Basel where he taught theology and Hebrew at the University.
He wrote some very extensive work in the field of Hebrew studies, natural science, geography, and theology.

The map is an antique woodblock German edition print from Sebastian Munsters Cosmographia, published by Heinrich Petri in Basel.

Publisher: Henricus Petrus (1508–1579) and his son Sebastian Henric Petri (1546, Basel – 1627, Basel) headed the printer shop of Basel (Basilea in Latin), called Officina Henricpetrina.
