Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The citadel of Rhodes, built by the Hospitalliers, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The map shows the old town with the city walls and Fortification. The map has a beautiful old hand coloring.
Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) one of the most important and famous mapmakers of the mid-sixteenth century, and published two books, an edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, in 1540, with 48 double-page woodcut maps, and his Cosmographia, published in 1544, which contained upwards of five hundred woodcuts, including 24 double-page maps.
