Description: This early Russian map of Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla) depicts the island located in the Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. The title cartouche references the Samoyedic and Ostyak peoples of Siberia. The map is a beautifully detailed copperplate engraving, created by renowned cartographer Jacques Nicolas Bellin.
Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772) was born in Paris and served as the hydrographer of France's hydrographic office. He was also a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London. Bellin's prolific career, spanning 50 years, resulted in many significant maps, particularly for the French Navy.
History: Most plates in the Dutch edition of Prévost's Histoire générale des voyages were engraved by Jakob van der Schley.
