Diverses Especes de Singes de l’Ile de Ceylon (Various Species of Monkeys on the Island of Ceylon)

Description:
This 1750 antique print shows various species of monkeys from the Island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The print is copperplate engraved and hand-colored, part of the Histoire générale des voyages, published by Jacques Nicolas Bellin.

Cartographer/Mapmaker:
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was a prominent French cartographer and hydrographer for the French Navy, as well as a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London. Over his long career, Bellin produced numerous maps and illustrations, many of which reflected the animals, landscapes, and peoples encountered during European voyages of exploration.
