Description:
This antique map of the Philippines is based on Pedro Murillo Velarde's map and was created by the French mapmaker Jacques Nicolas Bellin in 1752. The 18th-century map is copperplate engraved with hand coloring, originally published in Antonine de Prévost d'Exile's Histoire Générale des Voyages. It provides a detailed depiction of the islands as they were known during the Spanish colonial period.
Cartographer/Mapmaker:
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772), a Royal Hydrographer and engineer of the French Navy, was a member of the Royal Society. His maps were published in Antoine-François Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages.
Engraver:
J. van der Schley (1715 – 1779), a Dutch engraver known for his precise and detailed work.
Origin:
From Histoire Générale des Voyages, French edition, published by Pierre de Hondt in The Hague (1747–1780).
Authenticity:
This is an original antique copperplate engraving with hand coloring. A Certificate of Authenticity is available upon request.
