Switzerland, 16th century early antique woodcut map of Lac Leman north side of the Alps, shared between Switzerland and France. Lake Geneva (Lac Lema) is one of the largest lakes in Western Europe.
Mapmaker / Cartographer: Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) Sebastian worked as a lecturer at the University of the Franciscan Order in Tübingen, where he studied astrology to the famous astronomer Johannes Stöffler. in addition to his main work, the Cosmographia, Sebastian Munster wrote some very extensive work in the field of Hebrew studies, natural science, geography, and theology.
The map is an antique woodblock German edition print from Sebastian Munsters Cosmographia, Book II published by Heinrich Petri in Basel.
Henricus Petrus (1508–1579) and his son Sebastian Henric Petri (1546, Basel – 1627, Basel) headed the printer shop of Basel (Basilea in Latin), called Officina Henricpetrina.
