Description: Baden im Aargau (Ober Baden) Switzerland near the river Limat. Fine woodcut bird's-eye view shows city walls, churches, castles (Stein Castle) and surrounding villages. The map is an old woodblock print, hand colored from Sebastian Munsters Cosmographia, one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century.
Sebastian Munster was a German writer, historicus, mapmaker, cartographer, cosmographer born in Ingelheim Germany.
Münster completed his studies at the Universität Tübingen in 1518 led by Johannes Stöffler. Munster published two books, an edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, in 1540, with 48 double-page woodcut maps, and his Cosmographia, published in 1544, which contained upwards of five hundred woodcuts, including 24 double-page maps. (Latin editions in 1550, 1552, 1554, 1559 and 1572.)
