This set of two antique sea charts, titled Representation du Cours ordinaire des Vents de Traverse, depicts the ordinary course of crosswinds across the Great Southern Sea, the Atlantic, and the Indian Oceans. The maps, centered on the equator, provide valuable insight into 18th-century navigation by illustrating wind patterns between continents. Of particular note are the representations of California as an island and Australia as New Holland, reflecting the geographical understanding of the time.
History:
Published in 1753, these sea charts were created by Jacques Nicolas Bellin, a renowned French cartographer, as part of Antoine-François Prevost’s L`Histoire Generale des Voyages. These maps played a crucial role in helping sailors navigate the world’s oceans, focusing on the crosswinds that shaped maritime routes. Bellin’s detailed engravings were highly regarded for their precision and artistry.
Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) served as Royal Hydrographer to the French Navy and was a member of the Royal Society. He was a prolific cartographer known for his extensive work in maritime mapping.
Publisher: The maps were engraved by Cosmant and published in L`Histoire Generale des Voyages, an important geographical work printed by Pierre de Hondt in The Hague between 1747 and 1780.
